Mayurbhanj: The Karanjia police on Friday claimed to have solved the mystery surrounding the recovery of a mutilated body, from an abandoned well at Panduaburu village near the border with Jharkhand, on January 15 with the arrest of two suspects.
Two nephews of the deceased, identified as Jaypal Hembram have been arrested on charges of murder. Last Friday, the mutilated body of Hembram had been recovered from the well. The incident created a sensation in the area as initially reports suggested that the deceased could be from neighbouring Jharkhand. However, the police later gathered information and established the identity of the man from a nearby village and began the probe.
Officials from the Karanjia police told reporters that during the probe they found Hembram had been strangulated to death by his brother’s sons over previous enmity.
“Both the accused threw the body in an abandoned well near the Odisha-Jharkhand border after carrying it for nearly six kilometres on a cycle. They have been arrested and forwarded to a court,” said Karanjia OIC, Satya Bikash Bhuan.
Earlier on January 21, the body of another elderly man had been found at Balabhadrapur village under Rairangpur police limits in the district. The deceased was identified as Shiba Charan Mahanta of the same village. The villagers spotted the old man’s body lying in the well and informed the police.
On December 15 last year, the body of a 17-year-old girl had been recovered from a well at Chorimaliput under Semiliguda police limits of Koraput district.
