Bhubaneswar: Odisha government is likely to pass a resolution in the lines of Telangana to establish the Vidhan Parishad, informed Transport Minister and chairman of a Special Committee Nrusingha Sahu today. The committee was formed with a few members to study feasibility of the proposal in lines of other states.
Sahu said the committee studied the formation of the Vidhan Parishad in Telangana and held discussions with the House chairman and other officials.
"They (Telangana government) created the Vidhan Sabha and then have passed the resolution to form Vidhan Parishad. We studied their resolution and the details on how it can be passed in the House. Similar resolution could be thought of for Odisha for approval in our Assembly. We will submit a report to Odisha government soon," Sahu told mediapersons.
The committee comprising Nrusingha Sahu, Nabarangpur MLA Manohar Randhari and Binjharpur MLA Pramila Mallick completed tour of Bihar and Telangana to study the functioning of the Legislative Council.
Reacting to the development, OPCC chief Niranjan Patnaik said the decision for setting up of a Vidhan Parishad is “like a lolipop for the disgruntled lot. Although it is a welcome move by the State government, it took too long. The process was accelerated as poll dates are getting nearer," Patnaik stated.
Echoing similar sentiments, Congress leader Suresh Routray said, "With the Vidhan Parishad decision, the government is trying to appease those who could not be adjusted in the present set up and have started working against the ruling party's interest. However, the Congress welcomes the decision."
Sources said the proposed Legislative Council in Odisha is likely to have 49 members.
