Nayagarh: A man from Ranpur Police limits in Nayagarh district allegedly sold off his two daughters, each for a sum of Rs 1 lakh to a child trafficker in Ranchi. The bizarre incident came to the fore after the two sisters reportedly ran away from their house in a bid to save themselves from the trafficker.
Allegedly, the accused father had struck a deal with a broker in Ranchi, and took an advance of Rs 2 lakh from him in exchange of his two daughters. When the girls learned of this on September 22, they somehow managed to run away from their house, deep into the forests of Chandradeipur.
Without food and water, the sisters stayed there for three days until they were rescued by police and officials of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). It is then that the duo narrated the ordeal before police and CWC.
"Our father used to torture us and did not give us anything to eat. When he brought home money, we came to know that we have been sold off. We decided to flee our house and stayed at Tarini mundia until we were rescued," alleged one of the girls.
While police have launched an investigation into the allegations, the accused father could not be contacted.
Meanwhile in Bolangir, the Childline and local police foiled an baby girl sale attempt on Sunday. Reportedly, one Sarojini Mahakud from Fapasi village under Saintala Police limits of the district was allegedly trying to sell her baby girl to one Balamati Suna of the same village when a joint team of Childline officials and local police apprehended the duo.
Subsequently, the officials rescued the baby girl and handed her over to the Child Welfare Committee.
Chairman of Bolangir CWC, Jogeswar Mohanty has said that they are waiting for the police report based on which they will decide the future course of action. “After reaching the spot, we found the accused handing over her baby to Balamati. Though the mother is denying the charges, we can give further information after a detailed police investigation report is out,” added Jogeswar.
