Cuttack: A 55-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to rape a minor girl in Banki area of Cuttack on the occasion of Holi on Monday.
As per reports, accused Suryamani Majhi, who works in a college allegedly lured the seven-year-old girl with sweets and took her to his house where he tried to rape her. However, the minor, who hails from Bhubaneswar and was on a visit to her aunt's home in Banki for Dola Purnima, gave Majhi a slip when her cousin, who is also a minor, reached there in search of her.
The minor girl narrated the incident to her mother who subsequently lodged an FIR with the Banki police.
Speaking about the incident, the girl's mother said, "We allowed our daughter to visit her aunt's home for Dola Purnima after her exams got over. But I never knew that such an incident will happen here."
"Suryamani Majhi, who is a neighbour of my brother molested my daughter and tried to rape her. This is a serious issue and I do not want other girls to go through that trauma. So I lodged a complaint at the police station immediately after my daughter described the incident in front of me," the girl's mother said.
The police have launched probe into the matter after arresting Majhi in this connection.
