Odisha farmers up in arms demanding crop insurance claims

Sambalpur: Farmers in Sambalpur staged a demonstration in front of the District Collectorate today demanding insurance claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme).

“The farmers had earlier held demonstrations in front of the cooperative society. But no action was taken in this regard. So we were forced to hold demonstrations again,” said one of the protesting farmers.

“Government authorities and insurance company officials have already conducted crop-cutting surveys. However, we are yet to receive the full claims,” another protesting farmer, Satya Kumar Hota said.

Farmer Sanjiv Kumar Patel said “We have received only Rs 20,800 and are yet to get the balance amount of Rs 41,000. We have submitted a written request for release of the remaining amount, but are yet to receive the same.”

The protesting farmers have reportedly threatened to continue their agitation if their demands are not fulfilled.
