Bolangir: Two farmers set their Chakada-infested standing crops in 8 acre land on fire in Sahajbahal and Jhareibahal villages in Sadar block of Bolangir today.

While Anil Hota from Sahajbahal set his crops on 5 acre-land on fire, Ashok Pradhan torched standing crops on 3 acre of land in Jhareibahal.

According to sources, the farmers used pesticides as per the direction of the agriculture experts but it was not effective. Later, they decided to burn the crops in the absence of any other alternatives.

"I took loans for farming. Even after the agriculture department officials paid a visit, nothing was done. Finally, I decided to set the crops on fire," Hota said.

Another farmer Rabi Sandh said "Despite using pesticides recommended by experts, it had no effect. With no other options left, I had to burn the crops."

No response has been received from the officials of the Agriculture Department on the matter yet.
