Koraput: A woman from Koraput district had to undergo untold misery and run around four hospitals across three districts in the State for treatment due to the alleged medical negligence by a doctor at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Jeypore.
The woman identified as Sabitri Majhi of Parata village under Nandapur block in the district had undergone family planning surgery at Koraput DHH on March 16. However, the doctor who performed the operation on her allegedly left a broken needle inside her uterus while stitching the surgical cut.
When Sabitri complained of pain in her abdomen after the surgery, an X-ray was conducted which revealed the presence of the broken needle which was lodged in her uterus. Later, doctors at the DHH referred Sabitri to SLN Medical College And Hospital at the district headquarters for removal of the surgical needle.
When she was shifted there, doctors referred her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur from where she was again shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack which is around 450 km away from Koraput.
Following her admission, a team of doctors at the SCB successfully removed the needle after nearly two-hours of surgery. The health condition of Sabitri is stated to be stable.
"I went to the district headquarters hospital for family planning operation but the doctor left a broken needle in my body while performing the surgery hurriedly. I had to undergo untold misery due to the doctor's mistake," said Sabitri.
An ASHA worker at Parata village who took Sabitri to the Jeypore hospital for family planning operation, said "After Sabitri complained of pain in her stomach, the doctors conducted an X-ray and found that a needle had been left inside her body. They immediately told us to shift her to Berhampur for better treatment and arranged an ambulance for us," she added.
Koraput Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Makarand Beura admitted to the serious medical negligence committed by the doctor.
"When the surgical cut was being stitched, the needle broke and entered into the organ. The doctor tried to remove it but failed. The patient was later sent to SLN Medical College from where she was taken to Berhampur and then Cuttack. The needle has been removed now and her health condition is stable," said Beura.
However, no action has been initiated against the erring doctor by the administration or police so far.
