Bolangir: Bolangir Superintendent of Police (SP) on Thursday placed a constable under suspension on charges of thrashing a young trader black and blue during vehicle inspection drive under the new Motor Vehicle (MV) Act recently.

Constable Asish Kumar Jal engaged in Patnagarh Police Station has been suspended from service while disciplinary action has been initiated against sub-inspector Bishnu Prasad Sabar in connection with the incident, SP M Sandeep Sampad said.

According to sources, one Depankar Panda was critically injured during a vehicle check up by police in Patnagarh on September 22. Family members of Panda later held a press conference and alleged that he was subjected to severe torture by the on duty police personnel.

Taking cognizance of the allegations, the SP personally took up the investigation into the case.
"We have inquired into the unfortunate incident at Patnagarh. After the probe, one constable who was involved in the incident has been suspended while disciplinary proceeding has been initiated against another officer," the SP said.

It may be noted that while the State government has already relaxed traffic norms under the new MV Act, so the exact reason behind the police excess on the youth is yet to be clear.
