Puri: Excise sleuths arrested two persons and seized 200 grams of brown sugar from their possession here in the pilgrim town on Thursday.
The drug peddlers were caught near Siddha Mahavir railway level crossing while smuggling the contraband item from Balasore through Purushottam Express.
Acting on a tip-off, excise officials laid a trap to bust the illegal trade and seized the narcotic substances from Purusottam Express.
The cost of the seized brown sugar is estimated to be worth Rs 20 lakh, officials said.
Few weeks ago, the Excise department's flying squad and police seized 47 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 4.70 lakh during a joint raid at Alipingala area under Sadar police limits in Jagatsinghpur district.
In November 2020, Excise sleuths conducted a similar raid and seized brown sugar worth Rs 3 lakh from Jajpur district. The raiding team also arrested three persons for allegedly smuggling the contrabands.
