Bhubaneswar: Central public sector units Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will set up two medical colleges in Orissa, officials said on Friday.

While MCL has taken initiatives to set up a medical college at Talcher in Angul district, NTPC will set up one near any of its operational areas, they said.

"Besides, the state government have also decided to request NALCO and SAIL to set up one medical college each in the state,” a senior health department official said after a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here.

Orissa is facing shortage of qualified doctors to provide basic health services to the people in rural and remote areas. Only three medical colleges are now operating in the government level and as many in the private sector.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences is being set up at Sijua near here and the state government has received applications for setting of medical colleges by private organisations at Kalahandi, Keonjhar and Balangir, the officials said.
