Bhubaneswar: Five educational institutions and deemed universities of Odisha made it to the top 100 list of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD) two weeks ago. However, with no government technical institutions finding place in the NIRF Rankings 2019, the Skill Development and Technical Education Department in Odisha has sought a reply from eight institutions within a week in this regard.
As per a letter of the SD & TE department, notices have been issued to BPUT Rourkela, IGIT Sarang, CET Bhubaneswar, PMEC Berhampur, GCE Kalahandi, GCE Keonjhar, IMIT Cuttack and CIME Bhubaneswar.
"The MHRD has recently published NIRF rankings, 2019. It is observed that neither BPUT nor any of its constituent/affiliated government engineering/professional colleges find place in the said ranking," the letter stated.
Earlier on June 13, 2018, these institutions were asked to prepare a time bound road map for participating in the NIRF Ranking process. "However, no response in this regard has been received from any college/university in this department till date. Rather to make the matter worse, none of our government technical/professional institutions, except VSSUT, have even participated in the recently concluded annual NIRF Ranking process," added the letter.
Keeping the above facts in mind, the department has asked these institutions to submit a reply within a week. "You are called upon to furnish a detailed report within a week as to why your university/institution do not find any place in the NIRF rankings, 2019, for kind perusal of Commissioner-Cum-Secretary," the letter mentioned.
The Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Madras, topped the national ranking of higher institutes. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and IIT-Delhi ranked second and third in the list, respectively. Of the top 10 institutes, seven are IITs. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Banaras Hindu University ranked seventh and 10th respectively.
The Delhi University’s Miranda House was ranked the best among colleges across the country, while the varsity’s St Stephen’s College was ranked fourth.
The HRD Ministry has been publishing the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) since 2016.
