Bhubaneswar: A whopping Rs 1,05,34,760 was collected as penalty from people for violating various traffic norms between September 1 and November 1 since the implementation of amended Motor Vehicle Act, State commerce and transport minister Padmanabha Behera informed the Odisha Assembly on Thursday.
Replying to a question raised by BJP MLA Mohan Charan Majhi, Behera said the highest amount of penalty of Rs 46, 00,850 was collected from 5317 persons for driving vehicles without valid driving licences.
Similarly, 2,111 people were penalised for driving vehicles without insurance and Rs 13, 79, 700 of penalty was collected from the violators during the period. The transport officials penalised 1177 persons for not having pollution certificates and collected Rs 38, 16,110 as fine. Besides, 490 persons were caught for drunken driving and Rs 7,38,100 was collected from them as penalty, the minister said.
Replying to another query posed by MLA Chakramani Kanhar over the arrangements made by the State government to issue driving licences, the minister said that 50 temporary camps were set up at various places in the State to provide learner’s licences to people.
The minister further informed that the number of road accidents decreased in September this year in comparison to last year. While 844 accident cases were reported in September 2018, 702 accidents occurred in September 2019.
However, the data regarding the accident cases in October have not been prepared yet, the minister added.
