Cuttack: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the community police service here at the Markat Nagar police station on Monday to mark Odisha Police Foundation day.

The new system has been coined as “Ama Police” to make the public more familiar with police to resolve several issues.

Presiding over the function Patnaik said, "The State government has started the policing system at one police station in each district of the state and soon the service will be extended to all police stations. I hope the new service will bridge the gap between police and public."

Under the scheme, a police station will be divided into contiguous beats. A police officer of the rank of ASI, Havildar or Constable will act as a Beat Police Officer and make efforts to contact each and every family of the beat area. The officer will be readily accessible to everybody for redressal of their problems.

The service which has been introduced on a pilot basis, aims to reorganize police stations for a better co-ordination and refurbish the sagging image of police.
