Bhubaneswar: With Odisha police intensifying its measures against drunken driving and other violations under MV Act, four persons in Sambalpur have been prosecuted for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
As per reports, the drunken drivers were penalised in a joint enforcement conducted by the RTO and police in the past two days as per the direction of Dipti Ranjan Patra, DCT North Zone.
The driving licences (DL) of all the four persons have been suspended for riding in an inebriated state, sources said.
On Thursday, a truck driver was caught driving the heavy vehicle under the influence of alcohol during the enforcement drive launched near Themera chowk in Sambalpur. The breath analyser report also confirmed that the driver had consumed alcohol which made him unfit for driving the vehicle as per the mandatory guidelines of the amended Motor Vehicles (MV) Act.
Senior officials further informed that the truck driver also failed to produce a valid driving licence. The driver has been booked under various sections - 180,181,184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Apart from the truck driver, two motorcyclists and a tractor driver have also been arrested in the district and their driving licences suspended on the charges of drunken driving.
It is pertinent to mention here that the State Transport Authority (STA) has announced to launch a massive crackdown against traffic violators under the amended Motor Vehicles Act from January 2021.
