Bolangir: In yet another incident of sheer ‘medical negligence’ in Odisha, a three-year-old girl was allegedly prescribed medicines meant for a 55-year-old person at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir.
As per sources, the pathology report of the minor girl got exchanged in the hospital following which the doctor prescribed medicines for the child without properly checking the reports.
Sankirtana Behera of Chimnibhati area in the district had taken his daughter Aniska to the hospital on February 15, as she was suffering from fever. The doctor present reportedly advised Behera to conduct blood and urine tests of Aniska at the pathology lab in the hospital.
However, when the family members of Aniska saw the unusual number of medicines, they felt a bit suspicious and checked the lab reports only to find that the reports of the minor girl has been exchanged with that of a 53-year-old and a 55-year-old person.
“My brother saw the reports and informed me that the medicines were meant for two elderly persons and not my daughter. What would have happened, had I given the medicine to my daughter? Behera rued.
After the incident surfaced today, the pathology department in the hospital has reportedly admitted its fault.
“The registration number of the child was mentioned as 121 in the lab records, but during despatch, the reports got exchanged,” said Manoj Patra, Associate Professor of the Pathology department of the hospital
"Prima facie, it seems to be a case of negligence. Following a probe into the incident, stern action will be taken against those found guilty," said Radheshyam Padhy, administrative officer of the hospital.
