Bhubaneswar: With the contentious Mahanadi matter still pending before Tribunal, the dialogue process between Odisha and Chhattisgarh should continue, said noted water conservationist Rajendra Singh. He further expressed hope that with change in government in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, the issue can be resolved amicably.
Singh met Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik at Secretariat on Saturday and discussed several issues including the River Resolution Policy.
“Today, there is a need to adapt and mitigate challenges arising due to climate change. I requested Odisha CM for a water literacy movement to address the issue of water scarcity and other pollution issues in the State,” said Singh.
Singh further stated that the flow of water to Odisha has stopped due to construction of number of barrages in Chhattisgarh. However, the new Chhattisgarh CM understands the importance and needs of farmers and a dialogue process is a must.
“Instead of waiting for the Tribunal’s order, State governments should also do their duty as well. There should be a Mahanadi family between Odisha and Chhattisgarh so that the issue doesn’t turn into a Cauvery-like dispute,” said Singh.
Singh further stated that there should be a healthy dialogue between Odisha and Chhattisgarh government. Mahanadi issue can be resolved if chief ministers of both States sit down and discuss the issue.
