Bhadrak: Hundreds of residents of Ghanteswar area including youths and elderly persons walked at least 40 kilometres on Thursday seeking appointment of permanent doctor at the local Primary Health Centre (CHC).

The marchers alleged that despite repeated requests to the concerned authorities seeking recruitment of medical staff at the health centre, their demands have remained unfulfilled since years.

In order to bring the matter to the eye of State authorities, locals decided to launch a padayatra from Ghanteswar to Bhadrak, a distance of around 40 kilometres and later staged a demonstration outside Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital.

An agitator, Laxmipriya Rout alleged, “The PHC doesn’t have permanent doctors. In order to press our demands, we launched the padayatra. Earlier, we had also arranged a signature campaign and submitted it to the concerned authorities but no steps were taken in this regards.”

District Collector Gyana Ranjan Dash and Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Jagannath Pohi rushed to the spot and assured the agitating residents to appoint a doctor at the PHC.

Meanwhile after the incident, the authorities have appointed a doctor for the PHC today.
