Kalahandi: Residents of Basantpada village in Lanjigarh of Kalahandi staged demonstration in front of the main gate of Vedanta Alumina plant today protesting discharge of red mud powder (RMP) by the industry.
The protesters alleged that local residents are suffering from different types of diseases because of RMP discharge. They also alleged that despite repeated reminders, local administration has not taken any steps to resolve the issue.
"We are suffering from different diseases because of red mud powder discharge. It is also affecting farming in the area," a protester said.
Lanjigarh Police reached the spot and pacified the crowd following which the protest was called off.
"We have assured them that a solution will soon be found for which we are in touch with the officials of Vedanta," IIC of Lanjigarh Police Station S Mandal said.
