Kendrapara: Two minor sisters- Purnima Giri and Sabita Giri- from Kendrapara district in Odisha will be honoured with the Indian Council for Child Welfare's (ICCW) National Bravery Award 2019 for showing extraordinary courage during a boat capsize incident, which saved lives of many people from drowning.

The sisters recently received invitations from ICCW to attend the award function to be held in Delhi in January 2020. They have been asked to prepare necessary documents and visit Delhi to receive the award.

"We are happy to inform you that you (Purnima & Sabita) have been selected as one of the awardees for the ICCW's National Bravery Award 2019," read the letter issued by the ICCW.

Notably, the two sisters, who hail from Mahakalpada in Kendrapara district had put their life in danger and managed to drag over 10 passengers to safety after a mechanised boat carrying passengers capsized in the Mahanadi River near Nipania village on January 2, 2019. At least 10 people, including seven children, were killed in the incident.

Earlier, the sisters were felicitated by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
