Bhubaneswar: Justice Raghubir Dash, former judge of Orissa High Court, has been appointed as the member of Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC). Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal today approved Justice Dash' name for the post.
“In exercise to the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of the Section 22 of the Protection of Human Rights Act (Act 10 of 1994), the Governor of Odisha is pleased to appoint Sri Raghubir Dash, former judge of Orissa High Court (Retired) to be the Member of Odisha Human Rights Commission with effect from the date he assumes charge of this office,” a notification issued by the Law department stated.
The State government had recommended names of the OHRC members and Chairperson for selection to the Governor on December 20. A retired Orissa High Court Chief Justice can be appointed Chairperson of the panel whereas two other members of the board will be judges of the HC.
It may be noted that the OHRC chairperson post has been lying vacant after the completion of tenure of Justice Bira Kishore Mishra on August 15 earlier this year.
The OHRC was established as per Section 21 of the Human Rights Protection Act, 1993 for protection and promotion of human rights of common man in the State. As per reports, more than 10,000 cases are pending before the OHRC.
