Bhubaneswar: Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel will be the next chief justice of Orissa High Court. He will be sworn in as the 27th chief justice of Odisha on October 12. The post was lying vacant after former chief justice C. Naggapan was elevated to the Supreme Court.
His appointment came after the Supreme Court Collegium of Judges headed by Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam recommended mass transfer and elevation of Judges of various High Courts including Odisha last month.
Born on July 7, 1953, in Hissar, Haryana, Justice Goel did his BA (Hons) and LLB from the Punjab University, Chandigarh.
He was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in July 1974. He practiced in the High Court of Punjab and Haryana for about five years and in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court for about 22 years. He also worked as a Standing Counsel and Additional Advocate General of UP in the Supreme Court and as a Standing Counsel (Civil) for NCT Delhi in the Delhi High Court.
Designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court on February 11, 1999, Justice Goel was elevated to a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 2, 2001.
He was appointed as Executive Chairman, Haryana State Legal Services Authority in May 2005.
He was the Chief Justice (Acting) of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from May 2011 till he joined as the senior most Judge of the Guwahati High Court in September 2011. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of this High Court on December 20, 2011.
