Sambalpur: The Hirakud dam authorities on Tuesday night opened five more sluice gates to manage the increasing water level in the reservoir. So far a total of 20 gates have been opened to discharge rain water from the reservoir to the Mahanadi River.
Although the authorities had decide to open only 15 gates, five more were opened keeping in view the IMD’s prediction of a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal by July 30, informed the Chief Engineer of Hirakud Dam, Jyotirmaya Rath.
Meanwhile, water level in the reservoir stood at 615.85 feet against the storage capacity of 630. The inflow of water into the dam reservoir was 1,01,800 cusecs while the outflow was 3,21,101 cusecs by 9 am today.
On the other hand, discharge of water from the Hirakud dam has led to the increase in water level in the lower basin of Mahandi River.
Water from the Hirakud dam is expected to reach Mundali by 1 pm on Thursday, informed authorities.
While the inflow of water to Mundali was recorded at 2,44,300 cusecs, 1, 24, 64 cusecs of water entered Naraj in Cuttack by 10 am today.
