Bhubaneswar: Two days after the ash pond leakage at Hindalco led to severe crop damage at Hirakud, the Orissa state pollution control board (OSPCB)  on Saturday directed the company to shut down its power plant at Hirakud.

OSPCB has also asked the company to give adequate compensation to the land owners whose crops have been damaged due to ash water.

The ash pond in Hindalco on Thursday night developed a leakage leading to overflow of ash water in the agriculture fields of nearby villages resulting in crop destruction.

This is the second such incident by the company within a month. Earlier on August 7, similar ash water was found in the canal distributaries at Sambalpur.

After these incidents, the OSPCB had visited the affected villages and examined the situation.Later on Saturday a meeting was held between OSPCB and Hindalco officials regarding the ash pond water leakage issue. The decision was made to shut down the company and also to compensate the affected villagers.

Everyday Hindalco power plant generates nearly 3000 tonne ash, of which 1000 tonne is being used for cement preparation whereas 2000 tonne is dumped.
