Bhubaneswar: Retired IPS officer and former DGP of Odisha, John Nayak succumbed to Covid-19 on Thursday night. He was 78.
Incumbent DGP of Odisha, Abhay paid humble tributes to Nayak and his inspirational life and career from a nondescript village to the top echelon of the police department.
"Mr John Nayak, a 1965 batch IPS officer who retired in 2002, succumbed to Covid-19 last night. His journey from a remote tribal village of Phulbani to rank of DG was inspirational. He was humble, accessible and compassionate. Our respectful tribute to him. RIP sir," Abhay wrote in his Twitter post.
A 1965 batch IPS officer, John Nayak was born in 1942 in tribal-dominated Kandhamal district. He passed his matriculation in 1st division and later graduated from Ravenshaw College in Cuttack and pursued MA and LL.B from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar.
Nayak joined IPS in 1965 and retired as the head of the State police wing in 2002. He held numerous important posts in the Police Department and was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious service in 1995 and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2002.
