Sonepur: A day after the inhuman torture meted out to a woman here was telecast on Orissa Television Limited (OTV), as many as five persons were arrested in connection with the case.

After receiving complaints from the victim Shantilata, Birmaharajpur police arrested her father-in-law Achyuta Kheti, brother-in-law Biswanath Kheti, neighbour Balaram Karna, Sushant Acharya and auto rickshaw driver Arjun Jal and registered cases under section 498(A) and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly abusing the woman.

However, four other sister-in-laws with the main accused Dileswar Kheti (brother-in-law) were absconding.

“We have registered cases under appropriate section of the IPC and arrested five persons among the nine accused. Four sister-in-laws of the victim along with her brother-in-law Dileswar Kheti are absconding and we will arrest them soon”, said superintendent of police Sanjay Kaushal.

While the incident has drawn severe criticism from many quarters, the State Women Commission said that it is closely monitoring the incident and its developments.

“Being the chairman of the state Women’s commission I am keeping an eye on the developments on the issue and we will definitely try to give justice to the victim”, said Jyoti Panigrahi, Chairman, state Women’s commission.

On Thursday, Shantilata, who was married to Markand Kheti of Khemaloe village in Ulunda block, was allegedly beaten mercilessly and tied up by her in-laws and sent to her parents place at Radhiapali village in a van. When the accused found no one at victim’s parent’s home, they waited for some time in the van with the victim along with her two and half year old son. 

Later, the villagers reported the incident to the Biramaharajpur police who came to the rescue of the victim. On complaint by the victim, the five accused were arrested today.
