Ensuring peaceful industrialisation major challenge: DGP

Cuttack: Ensuring a peaceful industrialisation in the state was a major challenge for the Orissa police besides tackling left wing extremism (LEW).

Law and order problems arising out of rapid industrialization like during land acquisition and displacements is a major issue for the police. We will come out with concrete proposals as to how to tackle these issues peacefully without the use of brute force, said the DGP Manmohan Praharaj after inaugurating the two-day 55th annual IPS officers conference here.

Praharaj said this in the wake of industrial unrest being reported from different parts of the state. While 14 tribals were killed in police firing at Kalinga Nagar steel hub in 2006, the security personnel had a tough time to tackle industry related violence in Posco`s proposed steel plant area near Paradip.

"The security personnel need to tackle such incidents without use of brute force," he said adding that police was also facing new crimes like economic offences and theft of natural resources like minerals.

A total of 107 IPS officers of the state, including the superintendents of police of different districts are attending the conference which would conclude on Thursday with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who also holds the Home portfolio scheduled to address the valedictory session.

The IPS meet is aimed at discussing to build a ‘motivated’ police force in the state and establish a strong coordination between the officers.

Several aspects of the force including expansion of its strength, improving training facilities for its personnel, seeking adequate budgetary provisions for police modernisation and motivating the force to face the Naxal menace as well as problems created by industrialization in the state are being deliberated in the conference.
