Cuttack:  After an eight-hour-long operation, forest officials were able to rescue five elephants that were swept away today near Mundali by floodwater in Mahanadi River.

As per reports, a joint operation by the officials of Chandaka, Athagarh and Cuttack forest divisions was taken up to rescue the pachyderms. As the elephants were trapped between Mundali and Naraj, three gates of Mundali barrage were closed and four gates of Naraj were opened as a result of which the water level in the river declined allowing the elephants to safely move out of water and return back to the Chandaka forest, informed sources.
