Bhubaneswar: The global temperature has risen by 1.3 degree Celsius over the last 59 years and the man-made greenhouse gases is the main reason behind such abnormal rise in temperature, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General (DG) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Sunday.
Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a workshop organised by Barendra Krushak Dhal Memorial Trust in Bhubaneswar yesterday, Mohapatra said, “The earth’s temperature has risen by nearly 1.3 degree Celsius since 1970. In comparison to last 100 years, the pace of increase in temperature has doubled in the last 50 years. The main reason behind this is the emission of man-made greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.”
As a result, there has been an extensive climate change and fall in amount of rainfall over the last few decades.
“The emission of greenhouse gases has resulted in climate change due to which the frequency and intensity of extreme climatic conditions such as cyclone, flood, drought, sunstroke, cold wave, thunderstorm and lightning have considerably increased, added the IMD DG.
Union Minister Pratap Sarangi and other dignitaries also attended the workshop.
