Puri: Lakhs of devotees thronged to Puri on Sunday to have a darshan of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra on the auspicious occasion of ‘Padma Besha’.

As per the Hindu mythology, Padma Besha is observed in Magha and Basant Panchami. It is celebrated on any Saturday or Wednesday between the reappearance of the new moon day. The deities are adorned with lotus-symbol of wealth and health- prepared from thermocol.

The deities were also adorned with “mukhapadma”, “kundal”, “chita”, “tahiaa”, swans, “shankhas” and “chakras” prepared from thermocol.

This apart, on this auspicious occasion a special dish was also offered to the deities known as “kheer”.

As per old belief, Manohar Das, a devotee of the Lord Jagannath had brought lotus for the Lord but the servitors did not allow Das to offer the flowers as they had already faded. But pleased with the His devotee’s devotion Lord Jagannath had preferred to adorn the flowers and subsequently the flowers had regained its lost vibrance.

It is also believed that one can earn divine blessings by offering prayer to the deities while they are on the “ratna singhasan”.

On this holy day elaborate arrangements were made for the smooth conduct of the annual event which holds relevance even today.
