SOCIAL-DISTANCING

Bhubaneswar: With social distancing becoming the most effective tool in the hands of authorities to curb the spread of Coronavirus, the Odisha government today asked its officials not to invoke section 144 and use it as a tool to enforce social distancing.

The directive comes in the wake of prohibitory orders being clamped by several district administrations as a measure to enforce social distancing in their respective regions. However, the government today categorically stated that such prohibitory orders cannot be used, rather IEC activities should be used to create awareness among people and motivate them to practice social distancing. While releasing a document on comprehensive operational guidelines on social distancing as a part of the response to the Coronavirus outbreak, the state government today clarified that the district magistrates and police cannot invoke section 144 under CRPC to enforce social distancing.
