Congress targets Centre, Odisha govt over women issues

Bhubaneswar: All India Mahila Congress general secretary and Odisha in-charge, Sandhya Sawalakhe targeted Odisha government and Centre over their failure to address women issues in the state and the country. She was addressing the Congress Swabhiman Sankalp Samavesh that was held today at the party’s office in Bhubaneswar.

Sawalakhe questioned “Have incidences of women exploitation declined in the last 18 years of this government? We have to open our eyes and see the reality. If we need to ensure women safety, we need to strongly stand together,” Sawalakhe said.

Sawalakhe asked the members of Mahila Congress to raise awareness about women issues and take up the fight to the Centre and Odisha government’s poor administration.

Reacting to Sawalakhe’s statements, BJP leader Lekhashree Samantsinghar said “BJP is the only party which has come up with laws with capital punishment for rape of minor girls through fast track courts. It has come up with new legislation on triple talaq to protect Muslim women too. The only party which has worked towards women empowerment is BJP.”

The Swabhiman Sankalp Samavesh was organised by Odisha Congress at its office in Bhubaneswar. The meeting was inaugurated by Odisha PCC chief Niranjan Patnaik in presence of Sawalakhe.

At the meeting, the Congress leaders voiced their concerns over rising incidents of crime against women, rape, sexual abuse of teenagers and domestic violence. They also criticised the Centre and the State government’s failure in ensuring 33 per cent reservation in Parliament and State assemblies.

“There are a lot of issues like women exploitation, 33 per cent reservation, women empowerment, chit fund issues and unemployment. We will take up one issue at a time and address them,” Odisha Mahila Congress President, Sumitra Jena said.

Niranjan Patnaik said “After a long time, the State Mahila Congress has come together and started the Swabhiman Sankalp Samavesh. I sincerely hope and believe that they will take strong steps to strengthen the Mahila Congress and contribute to Odisha’s development.”
