Balangir: Death of a college girl in a road mishap sparked tension in this western Orissa district with irate people setting fire to the passenger bus that ran over the victim`s bi-cycle, police said.

The incident took place when Bandana Nag a student of Plus 2 first year student of Rajendra College along with another girl was going to the College by a bicycle from the mission campus. The passanger bus coming from Patnagarh to the district headqarter town hit the girl who died on the spot.

As the people blocked the road and set fire to the bus demanding adequate compensation for the victim`s family, the district administration announced Rs 50,000 as ex-gratia.

The local MLA and the state planning and coordination minister A U Singhdeo also announced Rs 20,000 for the deceased girl`s family.

The driver of the bus was absconding.
