According to sources, the Council’s executive committee has recommended the Higher Education department to scrap the merit list which it strongly believes not ‘worth publishing’.
A week ago a similar move was initiated by the BSE which decided to abolish publishing of top 100 list of meritorious students from the current year aiming to keep stress of the students at abeyance.
Unhealthy competition among self-financing colleges to secure a place in the list and ‘no extra gain’ to these students, are cited as main reason behind the exercise.
“To market themselves as the best educational institute and attract more students, the residential colleges try to go to any extent for a place in the list. This very often instigates them to resort to unfair means like buying of question papers, influence evaluation and manipulate tabulation to ensure their students secure good marks” said an official.
“Minus the list, these colleges would definitely refrain from taking any unfair means to register performance,” added the official.
More so, the students placed in the toppers’ list hardly get any benefit during in the next level of studies. Rather it develops stress among many.
“The decision is certainly a welcome step. It will undoubtedly keep the morale of the students intact,” Ramachandra Khuntia, an educationist opined.
