Bhubaneswar: While most animals would avoid going even close to a venomous and deadly King Cobra, the mongoose is certainly not the one to back off. In fact, the agile and gutsy mongooses are known to be the worst predators of snakes of all species, including cobras.

One such fierce wild encounter between the arch foes at the Panchalingeswar forest in Balasore district has been caught on camera by some amused passersby on Saturday.

In the video, a mongoose could be seen approaching a giant King Cobra in an attempt to decapitate and devour the reptile and in the process leaving it badly injured. The King is seen repeatedly trying to strike the mongoose who keeps ducking the fangs with lightning-quick reflexes. The nerve-racking fight went on for a long time as people stood by the roadside and watched the mortal combat with horror.

Later upon being informed, forest officials reached the spot and rescued both the animals. The injured King Cobra has been taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment.

“Animals trying to kill a snake is like a suicidal bid.  But mongooses have their own tricks to surprise the reptiles through sheer reflex. Living with snakes for years in jungles, mongooses have honed the skill to deal with snakes and resistance to venom. Agility, thick coats and glycoprotein production makes the mongoose immune to venom. Their thick and sharp jaws bring snakes down in seconds,” said a forest official.
