Woman jumps into river with 5-year-old daughter

Bhubaneswar: A woman today jumped into Bramhani river along with her five-year-old daughter in Kendrapara district over suspected family feud.

The mother-daughter duo was fished out by fire brigade officials with the help of locals and rushed to the nearby hospital but declared dead on arrival.

The woman, from Sorisada village under Aul block, allegedly took the extreme step following a prolonged family dispute.

"We were informed over phone about the incident. We reached the spot and carried out rescue operation and rushed the duo to hospital but they were declared dead," said a fire brigade official Natwar Nayak.

The brother of the deceased woman said she had told him over phone on Monday evening that her husband beat her up. “I consoled her and told I would come and talk to her husband. Today morning, a stranger called me from her phone and told someone has left the mobile, a purse and footwear near the river. I rushed to the spot and called the fire department,” he said.

Meanwhile, police have started investigation into the incident.
