Woman consumes poison, feeds same to baby over family quarrel

Udala: A trivial family quarrel ended up in a tragedy after a woman committed suicide by consuming pesticide and killed her nine-month old daughter by feeding her the same at Vegidiha village under Kaptipada police limits here in Mayurbhanj district today.

Both were admitted to Kaptipada CHC where the baby died at around 10 pm last night just after the primary treatment. Her mother was referred to Baripada in a serious condition, doctor Umakant Baske of Kaptipada CHC said. The mother succumbed to poison while undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital.

Locals said deceased woman Jema Singh had a quarrel with her husband Rama Singh yesterday over some family issues. Being irate over the spat, Jema went to the nearest forest with her baby and fed her the poison there before taking the same.

Family members traced the duo lying near the forest in a critical condition and rushed them to Kaptipada health centre.
