Bhubaneswar: The derailment of Kalinga Utkal Express on August 19 occurred due to ‘Failure of Railway Staff’ read a preliminary report submitted by Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northern Circle on Tuesday.
A statutory inquiry into the derailment of train number 18477 – Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express – between Khatauli-Mansurpur stations of Delhi Saharanpur section under Delhi Division of Northern Railway has been held by the Commissioner of Railway Safety Shailesh Kumar Pathak.
The provisional findings attached to the preliminary report mentioned the negligence of the railway staff.
Meanwhile, the findings are under the consideration of the Government.
It is worthwhile to mention that 22 persons were killed, 40 persons were grievously injured and 66 persons sustained simple injuries due to the derailment.
The Indian Railways had terminated services of 13 employees, including a Junior Engineer and 11 'gangmen' or track maintenance personnel, for "dereliction of duty" in connection with the accident.
