Rourkela: A day after a labourer sustained critical burn injuries in a mishap at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), another fire mishap broke out in the steel melting shop (SMS-II) on the plant premises today after hot liquid metal spilled out of a ladle.
According to sources, nearly 150 metric tonne of hot liquid spilled in the melting shop causing a fire mishap and damaging machinery worth Rs 1 crore.
Meanwhile, three fire engines have been deployed to douse the flames. No casualty has been reported from the spot.
It has been alleged that the Chief Inspector of Factories & Boilers, Odisha is not performing his duties well and the RSP authorities are not taking adequate safety measures.
"RSP presently seems as guardian-less, each department is headed by a General Manager working for their own interest and are not concerned about the benefit of the plant. Monthly review in the plant by the department safety committee, central safety committee, departmental production committee and central production committee is not being undertaken since last 30-40 years," said Rourkela Shramik Sangh (RSS) general secretary Prashant Behera.

Earlier on Saturday, a labourer identified as Sahil Kumar Purti had sustained critical burn injuries after a ladle containing around 150 tonne hot liquid metal had snapped off a crane and fell on him in the SMS-II.
Following the mishap, Sahil was rushed to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) and admitted to the ICU. He has sustained over 70 per cent burn injuries, medical sources said.
Official sources said, Sahil is likely to be shifted to SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar or any other premier hospitals in the twin city shortly.
The incident had triggered resentment among labourers in the plant. The workers’ association demanded for necessary safety measures to avoid such mishaps in future. They also demanded action against staff responsible for the mishap.
