Traders gherao Berhampur MLA’s residence over bus terminal relocation

Berhampur: Members of small traders’ association gheraoed MLA Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik’s residence in Berhampur today protesting relocation of the city bus terminal.

“We demand the administration to make arrangements for rehabilitation of 200 traders while shifting the bus terminal,” a trader Dipak Sahu said.

The protesting traders have alleged that the bus terminal is a source of livelihood for more than 200 small traders and 400 others depending on them and relocation will affect all.

The bus terminal is scheduled to be shifted to Haladiapadar tomorrow and the district collector had already communicated the decision to concerned parties, informed sources.

Demanding fulfillment of their demands, a letter has been written by the traders’ association to the MLA and BDA (Berhampur Development Authority) Chairman.

In response, Berhampur MLA, Dr Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik has assured to resolve the problem soon.

“I will soon hold a meeting with the BDA chairman, vice-chairman and collector to discuss the issue and find a solution for the traders,” said Patnaik.

Meanwhile, the Ganjam Bus Owners’ Association has alleged that the bus terminal is being shifted without any prior notice. They have warned to go on a strike if proper arrangements are not done before shifting the bus terminal.

Secretary of the association, Santosh Kumar Pati said, “We welcome the government’s move to relocate the bus terminal but we haven’t received any written assurance from them. Only after the construction work of the new bridge is completed, we will relocate.”

“They are in a hurry to start operation with only few buses which will lead to problems as there are no proper security arrangements at the new bus terminal,” Pati added.

Speaking on the issue, BDA chairman, Subash Maharana said “The bus stand is not being relocated completely, so the market will continue to run. It will take at least 1 to 2 years for the new terminal to start functioning properly.”
