Puri: A day after a four-year-old boy died after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs in the backyard of his house at Jagannath Colony here, the Puri municipality issued directions to strictly enforce the guidelines to curb stray dog menace in the city, which has been grappling with problem despite the civic body being granted assistance and issued guidelines from the government for the same.
The copy of a 2014 resolution obtained reveals that the Urban Development department granted Rs 3.8 lakh to the civic body for sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs. However, the resolution was only passed but no action was taken on it leading to an increase in stray dog menace.
Following yesterday’s incident, the Puri Municipality has finally asked the chief district veterinary medical officer to prepare an action plan for immediate sterilization and vaccination of the stray dogs.
“We will discuss with the Puri municipality authorities and the chief district veterinary medical officer and seek a solution through which such type of incidents can be stopped,” said Puri Sub-Collector, Udhav Majhi.
“The death of the 4-year-old was a lesson for us and in the next 7 days we will sterilize all the stray dogs. We have sought an action plan from the chief district veterinary medical officer,” said executive engineer of the Puri Municipality, Sanjay Mishra.

On the other hand, the Maltipatpur Auto drivers association has launched a drive to catch all stray dogs. The members of the association caught as many as 30 stray dogs from Jagannath colony.
Moreover, the Nagrik Sachetan Manch has demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family of the 4-year-old killed by stray dogs.
“The administration did not even announce a single penny as compensation for the poor family. I don’t understand for whom the money is being saved. We demand that the family should be given Rs 5 lakh immediately,” said Convener of the Nagrik Sachetan Manch, Priyadarshan Patnaik.
