Cuttack: Md Mustafa, the accused in the Salepur rape case, reportedly tried to commit suicide by hanging himself in the latrine of the Salepur Sub Jail Wednesday night. However he was rescued by the jail staff.

According to reports, Mustafa was not seen for a long time last evening. After a frantic search, an inmate spotted him inside a latrine of the jail attempting to hang himself from the ceiling using a towel. He immediately informed the jailor following which Mustafa was rescued and administered medical help.

Mustafa told the jail authorities that he was ashamed and did not want to live anymore, said sources. On the other hand, the jail authorities have not come out with any statement in connection with the incident.

On April 21, Mustafa allegedly raped and strangulated a six-year-old girl inside a school campus at Jagannathpur village of Salepur in Cuttack district. Although the minor was rescued and admitted to SCB Medical College and hospital with grievous injuries on her head, neck, face and private parts, she died while undergoing treatment on April 29.

Meanwhile, another case has been registered against the accused for attempting suicide.
