Bhubaneswar: Despite adequate security arrangements, Utkal University here today plunged into chaos after miscreants hurled bomb at a women's hostel in the premises following a clash between two groups of students ahead of students' union elections.

As situation spiraled out of control, police imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC near the main gate. Hours later, the miscreants again hurled a bomb at the office of vice-chancellor despite prohibitory orders

The violence creators fled the spot soon after hurling the explosives. Police Commissioner YB Khurania, DCP Satyabrat Bhoi reached the spot and started investigation.

The incident triggered panic among the students especially girl inmates of the campus hostel.

Police suspected that the incident is a fallout of an attack on a student by his rival group near varsity main gate in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, campus security has been tightened further. Entry of outsiders has been strictly restricted as police are allowing only the students, staff and hostel employees into the campus on production of proper identity proof.

"We have kept a close vigil on the situation. Now, four platoons of police have been deployed. If required, more will be mobilised," the DCP said.

Earlier on September 13, violence was witnessed on varsity premises after a group clash which left two students injured including a presidential aspirant.

A complaint was lodged at Saheed Nagar police station in this regard allegeing that outsiders created violence in the hostel.
