Bhubaneswar: Taking a leaf out of the Madhya Pradesh government’s plantation measures along the Narmada river, the Odisha government has decided to spend Rs 200 crore in the first phase for plantation on both sides of Mahanadi river and tributaries Ib and Tel. This would help in conservation and ground water recharge. A high-level meeting under chairmanship of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took a decision in this regard on Tuesday.
The plantation will be undertaken on 200 square kilometers along the embankments of the rivers in the first phase in 2018-19.
Earlier, the Forest and Environment Minister had announced that nearly three crore saplings will be planted in next two to three years.

The Madhya Pradesh government has created a world record by planting six crore saplings on July 2 on the banks of Narmada.
