Bhubaneswar: A team of Odisha police will interrogate top Maoist leader Jinugu Narasimha Reddy alias Jampanna and his wife who surrendered before Telangana police recently.
"We have sent a team led by a SP-rank officer to Hyderabad to interrogate them and extract more information," DGP RP Sharma said.
Jampanna who was carrying a cash reward of Rs 25 lakh on his head cited ill health and ideological differences as reasons behind his surrender, Sharma added. A member of the Central Military Commission of the Maoists, Jampanna has been active in Odisha since 2009.
His wife Jaya alias Durga carrying a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on her head also surrendered before Telangana police. Durga was an active member of KKBN division, the DGP informed.
Since 2009, there have been some major Maoist incidents in Kandhamal and Koraput and Jampanna's involvement in these cases is suspected. In 2011, he was made in-charge of Chhattisgarh-Odisha border committee of the Maoists, the DGP said.
According to sources, in 2013, Odisha Maoists Committee was formed and he was made in-charge. They created some divisions including KKBN to create a special corridor between Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Jampana was in-charge of the division.
He was involved in a exchange of fire between Maoists and SOG in Baliguda in June, 2017 in which a jawan was killed and another had sustained injuries. He had also led a gun battle in Kandhamal on September 10 this year in which a woman cadre Maoist was killed. After that incident, he was not traced in Odisha, the State police chief informed.
