Jagatsinghpur: The future of as many as 12 schools with less than 10 students in Jagatsinghpur district is at stake as the Odisha government is mulling to close them and transfer the students to nearby schools.
As per reports, the government is not satisfied with the way the schools are running even though the requisite infrastructure and teachers are available. Sources believe the number of students in government schools is declining due to growing preference for private schools.
“Parents are not at all interested to send their children to government schools. Besides, several private schools coming up in the area has adversely affected the strength in schools run by the government,” said a local Atulya Kumar Biswal.
“The government school teachers are not being able to look after even 10-15 students and impart quality education,” alleged a parent Dalagovinda Das.

On the other hand, teachers have also expressed their helplessness in increasing the strength of students in these schools.
“We are not satisfied with our job. The government is paying us so much to nurture and educate children but due to several issues plaguing the schools, parents are shifting their kids to private schools,” said the Headmaster of Ugratara Primary School here.
“We have directed the block education officers (BEOs) to submit an assessment report on 12 schools and specifically give us suggestions following which we will initiate the process of closing the schools and shift the students and teachers to nearby schools,” said the district education officer, Kapilendra Mishra.
Meanwhile, the government has also ordered the BEOs in the district to submit an assessment report on another 15 schools where the total strength is below 15.
