Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Cabinet today approved a proposal to construct the Gangadhar Meher Lift Canal System which was announced recently by CM Naveen Patnaik for Bijepur in Bargarh district.
Two other proposals including tender for construction of sewerage system for Bhubaneswar sewerage district-II were also approved by the State Cabinet.
The Lift Canal System will provide water to rain- fed and drought prone lands of about 25,000 hectares in Bijepur, Sohela and Barpalli of Bargarh district. It will draw water from Hirakud Dam through Bargarh main canal. The project will be completed in five years at an estimated cost of Rs1246 crores.
"The lift irrigation project will source water from nearby water bodies like Hirakud reservoir and channel them via canals. However it has been observed that in Sohela, Bijepur, and Barapali blocks, if canal water is further made available through pipelines then around 32000 hectares land can be irrigated," said Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout.
Similarly, tender for sewerage construction was approved in a bid to check water pollution in Daya and Kuakhai rivers on the outskirts of the city.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared by experts of IIT, Roorkee and it was approved in 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs 754 crore. It has provisions for laying of sewers, construction of Sewerage Treatment Plant ( STP) and pumping stations.
The DPR was prepared for development of scientific Integrated Sewerage System of Bhubaneswar City for collection, transportation and treatment of sewage generated from the city. The project will benefit population of 22.186 till 2041.
"Bhubaneswar has been divided into 6 districts for the sewerage project. JICA is funding the project in one district, whereas two other districts are being funded by the Finance Commission. The projects in the rest three districts are being undertaken by the State and the Central governments jointly," said Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi.
