New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The Centre is mulling to increase the number of seats in National Institute of Technology (NIT) for female students as only 2,500 female students have taken admission to the NITs across the country this year as compared to 3,900 last year.
Taking cognizance of the declining trend of female students taking admission in NITs, the HRD ministry is considering adding extra seats from next year along the lines of IITs, HT reported citing sources.
NITs have witnessed a 9 per cent dip in the female candidates’ admission to the premiere institutions. Only 13 per cent female candidates reportedly took admission in NITs this year as against 22 per cent last year.

Meanwhile, officials blame the Centre for the sharp decline stating that the government’s decision to withdrew the allotment of 40 per cent weightage to Class 12 marks for determining rankings in the JEE has led to the downfall.
This decision of the government hit the female students hard who usually perform better than their male counterparts in Class 12 exams, said sources.
Worth mentioning that the results of the JEE Advanced 2017 were declared on June 12. Of the total 2,20,000 students who had appeared for the test held on May 21, as many as 2700 aspirants were from Odisha. Around 300 Odia students had made it to the merit list.
