Infant girl dies after mother throws her into fire

Bhubaneswar: The seven-month-old girl who had sustained serious burn injuries after her mother allegedly threw her into fire at Salia Sahi under Nayapalli police limits in Bhubaneswar, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday night.

According to sources, the incident occurred on Thursday morning when the woman was in the house along with her daughter. The woman, suspected to be mentally ill, took a cloth soaked with kerosene and set it on fire. Later, she threw her baby on the burning cloth. Hearing the infant's screams, the neighbours rushed to the house and rescued the baby.

The infant had sustained severe burn injuries and was initially rushed to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after her condition deteriorated.

It is suspected that the incident could be a fallout of frequent family feuds and quarrel with her husband as she was his second wife.

Meanwhile, the police have detained the mother .
