Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon is most likely to hit coastal Odisha in next 3-4 days, the local Met office said today.
Talking to OTV, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, said a trough line has formed over Uttar Pradesh and stretched up to the north Bay of Bengal through West Bengal. Under its influence, there would be norwester (Kalabaisakhi) in some parts Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal and Angul districts in the next 24 hours.
Talking about the onset of monsoon, Sahu said most parts of the state had witnessed a rise in temperature with severe humidity since last four days as the wind was blowing from the north-west direction.
“But with the change in the wind direction from the south-west, temperature would come down in coastal Odisha from June 14 onwards with the advance of the monsoon. Considering the speed of the wind, it is expected that the monsoon would hit some parts of north and south coastal districts in a couple of days tentatively between June 14 and 16,” he added.
But he said the onset of monsoon in interior Odisha could be delayed by 3-4 days as the temperature in this region would hover around 40 degree Celsius during the period. “There will be delay in the onset of monsoon if temperature continues to prevail,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, heat conditions continued in western Odisha today with Balangir remaining the hottest place with 42.5 degree Celsius followed by Hirakud, also in western region, which recorded 42.1 degree celsius, a Met release said here this evening.
The industrial belt of Jharsuguda recorded a maximum temperature of 41.5 degree Celsius while the mercury stood at 41.3 degrees in Sambalpur and 40 degrees in Sundargarh, it said.
Though temperature dropped considerably in several areas of coastal region, high level of humidity made life uncomfortable.
In the capital city of Bhubaneswar, the temperature stood at 39.4 degree celsius, while relative humidity remained as high as 87 per cent.
The temperature in Cuttack was 38.8 degrees while it was 37.4 degrees in Balasore, the release added.
