Konark: The much-awaited mass nesting of the Olive Ridley turtles has begun at Konark beach. The rare sea turtles which generally arrive in December have arrived a month ahead.
According to information, forest officials traced the first nesting late on Tuesday night nearby Kuanrpur breeding centre. The eggs were later brought to the hatchery where they will be under observation for the next 45 to 60 days.
“As the condition of the beach as well as the weather is very conducive this year, turtles are likely to arrive in large numbers for the annual nesting,” Konark Forest Range Officer, Aditya Mishra said.
“Our officials are aware about the development and we are also getting good cooperation from the locals so we hope the mass nesting will go at a smooth pace without any problems,” Mishra said.
Not only, Konark, but these rare aquatic species also throng Rushikulya river mouth and Gahirmatha beach in Kendrapara.
